China has demanded that Afghanistan do more to protect Chinese citizens after a bombing at a restaurant in Kabul killed at least seven people, including a Chinese man.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing has asked Afghan authorities to take further measures to protect the safety of Chinese nationals, projects and institutions in the country, conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Guo said China strongly condemns and firmly opposes terrorism in all forms, and supports Afghanistan and regional countries in their joint efforts to combat terrorists and violent activities.

Five Chinese nationals are among more than a dozen others injured in the blast.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said the Chinese side has made emergency representations to the Afghan side, urging it to make every effort to treat the injured.

Guo added Chinese citizens are urged to refrain from travelling to Afghanistan in the near future, and that those already in the country should pay more attention to their safety.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghan authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of the blast, and Interior Ministry spokesperson Mufti Abdul Mateen Qani said on Tuesday they are still investigating the explosion. (Xinhua and agencies)
