China on Monday said a preliminary trade deal with Canada was not directed at any third party.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun also told a regular media briefing that arrangements made between the two countries to properly address their economic and trade issues are beneficial to world peace and prosperity.

Under the deal, Beijing is expected to reduce tariffs on Canadian canola imports and grant Canadians visa-free travel to China.

Over the weekend, US President Donald Trump threatened to place 100 percent tariffs on goods from Canada if Ottawa finalises the deal with Beijing.

"China and Canada have established a new type of strategic partnership... it does not target any third party," Guo said.

"China advocates that nations should approach state-to-state relations with a win-win rather than zero-sum mindset, and through cooperation rather than confrontation."

He added that the deal is in line with the common interests of the people of China and Canada, and benefits world peace, stability, development and prosperity.

The agreement was reached during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to China earlier this month. (Agencies)
