Chief Executive John Lee has underscored the importance of improving the executive-led political system and vowed to strengthen his government's sense of ownership over Hong Kong, following a Beijing official's address on the city's governance.

Lee was among government officials and lawmakers who watched a livestreamed speech made by director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office Xia Baolong on Monday.

The Beijing official overseeing Hong Kong affairs called on the city to improve its executive-led governance model, which requires support from the legislature and the judiciary.

"The SAR government will strengthen its sense of ownership and bear the primary responsibility for governance. All sectors of Hong Kong should also proactively consolidate and improve the executive-led system," Lee said on Tuesday.

"The painful lessons of interference, obstruction and destruction of the executive leadership since Hong Kong's return to the motherland have reminded us to cherish the hard-won favourable situation."

The chief executive also repeated his calls to lawmakers to use their influence and offer correct information and facts to the public.
