Mainland authorities on Thursday said passenger trips during the Spring Festival travel rush are expected to hit a record 9.5 billion.
The 40-day period, known as Chun Yun, starts on Monday.
National Development and Reform Commission Deputy Director Li Chunlin said he expected even stronger demand for family visits and tourism this Spring Festival, with many people choosing to drive.
Railway and civil aviation passenger volumes are projected to reach 540 million and 95 million, respectively, with both the overall scale and peak daily traffic expected to surpass historical levels, Li said.
Li told a news conference that authorities will boost transport capacity.
"Authorities will enhance demand forecasting and increase capacity on key routes during peak hours in major areas. They will also improve service quality by optimising ticketing, security checks and transfer services," he said.
He added that Chun Yun is a complex, nationwide operation that carries the hopes of millions to reunite for the New Year.
He says departments would work together to ensure people get home safely. (Xinhua)
