Police said a local couple and two doctors have been arrested in connection with a multi-year insurance fraud operation, cracking down on a new variant of "crash-for-cash" scams.

The investigation, led by the Commercial Crime Bureau, began after a review of over 100 suspicious claims referred by insurers and the public.

Officers said they identified a husband and wife allegedly at the centre of 22 of these cases.

Police said the couple had allegedly staged or falsified traffic incidents, variously posing as drivers, passengers or pedestrians struck by private cars or taxis over four to five years.

Following these incidents, officers said they would report injuries and file civil compensation cases against the involved drivers and their insurers.

"Upon examining the documentation, police discovered the couple had submitted forged records, including vehicle repair receipts and income proof, along with multiple medical certificates used to secure extended sick leave," Superintendent Fung Pui-kei said.

The claims, he said, sought compensation for repair costs, lost income and medical and legal expenses, with the highest single claim exceeding HK$300,000.

In coordinated raids across the city on Wednesday morning, police targeted several medical clinics and vehicle repair shops involved.

The operation resulted in the arrest of three men and one woman, aged 37 to 69, including the married couple and two local doctors.

Police said a large quantity of documents and electronic devices were seized, alongside HK$300,000 in cash, two luxury watches and a collection of gold jewellery from the couple's residence.

A taxi registered to the wife was also impounded.

Police said all four individuals remain in custody as the investigation continues.
