Chief Executive John Lee on Tuesday said a white paper released by Beijing on national security in Hong Kong is a call for continued vigilance against persistent threats.

He also said his administration will faithfully discharge its duties to safeguard national security in accordance with the requirements laid out in the paper.

"The white paper reminds us that we must always stay vigilant against national security risks. The release of the white paper serves as the sternest warning to the traitors who betray the country and Hong Kong," Lee said.

"As the head of the SAR, I will lead and coordinate the executive authorities, the legislature and the judiciary to fulfil our responsibilities to safeguard national security."

The 17-page document released by the State Council Information Office outlined the central government's fundamental responsibility for national security matters concerning the territory, as well as Hong Kong's achievements in fulfilling its constitutional duty.
