The Federation of Trade Unions (FTU) unveiled on Saturday a series of proposals for consideration at the upcoming Two Sessions meetings in Beijing next month, with a focus on strengthening connectivity in the Greater Bay Area.
FTU president Stanley Ng, also a deputy to the National People's Congress, said the proposals had been designed with active participation by Hong Kong in the country's 15th-Five-Year Plan .
"I personally will focus on proposals that better connect the high-speed rail network in Hong Kong with those on the mainland and on gradually increasing transmissions of electricity generated from environmentally friendly sources from the mainland to Hong Kong,” he said.
“Once Hong Kong’s high-speed rail network is better integrated into the national network, connectivity between the two places will be strengthened and drive Hong Kong to better integrate into overall national development, thereby bringing new opportunities in trade, tourism and professional sectors.”
Ng wants the frequency of short-haul services to be ramped up, especially during peak periods such as weekends and public holidays, and more stops along the way.
Authorities should also regularly analyse ticketing data and passenger flow trends between West Kowloon station and mainland cities, Ng said, to enable more flexible deployments of railway capacity.
On the proposal to import more green energy from the mainland, Ng said such a move offered a stability to power supply that the SAR would need to develop innovative technologies and the artificial intelligence sector, which requires massive energy consumption.
He also suggested the construction of a high-voltage power grid connecting Shenzhen to Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis development project.
