Authorities on Tuesday announced that the expanded Terminal 2 (T2) at Hong Kong International Airport will be officially opened on May 27.

Speaking at an event marking the Year of the Horse at the airport, Fred Lam, the chairman of the Airport Authority, said 15 airlines will gradually move into the new terminal building.

He noted that the overall design concept of T2 is more vibrant and will be integrated with new smart technologies and self-service facilities.

At the same event, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan noted that with the Three-Runway System in full service, the government is stepping up efforts to expand Hong Kong's air traffic network.

"Over the past nine months, the government has been actively pursuing updates or expansions to our air services agreements with various civil aviation partners. A total of nine partners have already concluded revisions and exercised new air traffic rights,” she said.

“We have also successfully signed new bilateral air services agreements with countries including Chile, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Cuba, Poland and Togo,” she said.

The transport minister said the target for the coming year is to secure agreements with 10 additional partners, with a particular focus on regions with further development potential; such as South America, Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Chan expressed confidence that the expanded T2 will enable the airport to handle passengers more efficiently, driving further growth in visitor numbers beyond the 61 million passenger trips recorded last year.
