The Observatory on Friday received more than a hundred earthquake reports from the public, saying they felt tremors for a few seconds.
The forecaster said a magnitude 4.0 quake was recorded in Yangjiang in Guangdong shortly before 2.30pm, noting that the epicentre was 260 kilometres away from Hong Kong.
It added that the local tremor felt indoors was similar to light trucks passing by.
