The finals for the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) competition being staged at Kai Tak Arena from February 28 to March 1 has been awarded the "M" Mark status by Hong Kong's Major Sports Events Committee.

The staging of the event, arranged by Cyber Games Arena, marks the first time that the finals for the league, one of the most fiercely contested esports competitions in the world, is being staged outside South Korea.

Committee chairman Wilfred Ng said the selection of Hong Kong as the first overseas host city underscored its significant position in esports.

"Audiences will experience the intense atmosphere as top professional teams vie for the title and enjoy the endless charm the esports bring," Ng said.

The "M" Mark System aims to encourage local sports bodies and private organisers to host major international events and develop them into sustainable projects, with some events also receiving funding support, the committee said.

It also aims to promote the development of major sports events, cultivate a sustainable sporting culture, enhance Hong Kong's image as a centre for major international sports events and bring tangible economic benefits to the community.
