Three men have been arrested on suspicion for conspiracy to rob after two people carrying HK$10 million were held up at knifepoint at Sheung Wan MTR Station in the morning on Friday.
Superintendent Lo Ka-chun from the police’s organised crime and triad bureau said the robbery attempt occurred after two victims had exchanged yuan and US dollars for Hong Kong dollars at a foreign exchange shop on Hillier Street in Sheung Wan.
Police officers, waiting nearby as part of a stakeout following a tip-off, subdued two suspects on the spot.
Another suspect, a driver who was waiting in a car nearby, was also arrested.
Lo said all three suspects, aged between 19 and 31, were detained for investigations.
The two victims, who were relatives, are residents of Macao and Hong Kong.
One of them was in a stable condition after being sent to Queen Mary Hospital with an injury on the left hand, Lo said.
“It has come to the attention of the police that there have been three robberies involving foreign currency exchange outlets in recent months, in which customers of these shops have been robbed," he said, with the two earlier robberies also happening in Sheung Wan.
"The police attach great importance to solving these cases and has used intelligence-led operations to that end.
“Using surveillance cameras installed as part of the SmartView programme, officers were able to collect important evidence to crack these cases.”
