One person was seriously injured and eight others hurt after a car was driven onto a pavement in Kowloon Bay on Monday afternoon.

Police were alerted to the accident on Lam Hing Street near Metro Centre II at around 12.40pm.

A car passenger, 75, suffered serious injuries to her head and ribs after being thrown out of the vehicle.

Police said she was believed not to have been wearing a seatbelt.

Eight pedestrians suffered minor abrasions and bruises.

They were conscious when taken to hospital.

The 75-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving.

He was not injured and passed a breathalyser test.

“The driver was trying to make a u-turn,” Inspector Tsoi Shiu-kei said.

“According to the police’s preliminary investigations, the driver mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the car to lose control and rush on to the pavement, hitting eight pedestrians.

"The female passenger in the car was thrown out of the vehicle.”

A witness said the car was being driven at quite a “high speed” and because it was lunch hour, there were dozens of people on the pavement at the time.

Another witness said he heard at least two bangs – of which the second was very loud – and that he also saw wrecked railings and a tree knocked down.
