Police said a 22-year-old man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of dangerous driving after a video surfaced online showing a child sitting on his lap and steering a car on the move in Tuen Mun.
The incident was captured in a video released on Sunday that lasted for more than a minute.
It showed a black car travelling along Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road in the direction of On Ting Estate.
In the clip, a young boy, believed to be sitting on the driver’s lap without a seatbelt, is seen continuously turning the steering wheel.
At least one passenger was in the back seat, while the adult driver occasionally reached over to control the wheel and brakes.
Police said officers from the New Territories North traffic investigation unit discovered the video during checks online and launched an investigation to track down the driver.
The following morning, authorities arrested the man, surnamed Lin, in Tai Po on suspicion of dangerous driving.
He is currently being held for questioning.
According to police, the suspect, who's from the mainland, is a relative of the child and the owner of the vehicle.
Authorities have warned that dangerous driving is a serious offence, carrying a maximum penalty of a HK$25,000 fine and three years in prison.
