A taxi driver and a passenger suffered fatal injuries after their vehicle was rear-ended by a double decker on the Lantau Link late Monday night.

Police received a report at around 11.16pm of the collision on Tsing Ma Bridge. It said a bus travelling towards the airport rammed into a stationary taxi with blinking hazard warning lights.

Online photos showed the back of the taxi was wrecked, while the windscreen of the bus was shattered.

The taxi driver, aged 66, and the 37-year-old passenger were trapped inside the taxi and were rescued by firemen later. Both men did not sustain superficial injuries but were unconscious, and certified dead at Yan Chai Hospital about an hour later.

A female bus passenger, aged 66, suffered minor injuries and was being treated at Princess Margaret Hospital.

The bus driver, 49, has been arrested for dangerous driving causing death. He is being detained for further enquiries.

Long Win Bus, a subsidiary of KMB, confirmed the bus had been serving its E32A route between Kwai Fong and Tung Chung. The operator said it was saddened by the accident, and pledged to cooperate with the police investigation.

The bus captain has been suspended from duty, the company added.
