A minibus driver succumbed to his injuries, while 16 others were wounded in two separate collisions in Yuen Long late on Wednesday night.
The first accident occurred just before 10pm, when two private cars and a taxi bound for Sheung Shui collided near Fairview Park.
Eight people were injured and were conscious when they were sent to hospital for treatment.
The accident caused a backlog of traffic that stretched for hundreds of metres.
About an hour later, a minibus arriving at the end of the tail couldn't stop in time and rear-ended a stationary truck.
The sheer force of the crash caused the truck to lunge forward, making impact with another two vehicles in front, according to the police.
The 49-year-old minibus driver was trapped in the severely damaged cabin, and was in a coma when rescued by firefighters. He was pronounced dead at hospital.
Eight others were injured in the second pile-up.
