Police on Friday said they arrested a 51-year-old man who was suspected of stealing about HK$35,000 from a bank in Wan Chai.
The force said they were notified of the case, which occurred at a Bank of East Asia branch on 56 Gloucester Road, at around 12.30pm.
Police were able to locate and arrest the man in Chai Wan later.
At a press briefing late on Friday, assistant district commander of Wan Chai district, Lam Kin-tat, said police believed the suspect had acted alone.
Lam said the suspect fled the scene by bicycle and had cycled to Admiralty, where he transferred to the MTR.
“Within just one and a half hours after the robbery, we successfully apprehended a suspect at Wan Tsui Shopping Centre in Chai Wan. We recovered cash believed to be the stolen proceeds from the case, along with an air gun and a hammer,” he said.
He added a bicycle that officers believe was used by the suspect to escape was recovered outside Admiralty Centre.
Lam said that the suspect was carrying a temporary identification document and claimed to be unemployed.
The man remains in police custody.
