The Harbourfront Commission said on Saturday more support facilities might be needed to complement diverse development directions set for the Hung Hom waterfront.
The comment by commission chairman Ivan Ho came after the opening at the end of March of the Hung Hom New Waterfront Event Space and last year's unveiling by the government of a plan to transform sites near the area's MTR station into a new waterfront landmark to improve public space and transport facilities.
The project calls for berthing facilities to promote yacht tourism as well as a housing development to provide some 1,300 private residential units.
The government has completed the first rounds of public consultation, Ho said, and the suggestions garnered have been passed on to the commission.
"We have been hearing a lot of comments about the government's hopes for berthing facilities at the Hung Hom waterfront area," he said.
"But would that require some support infrastructure?
"Is it possible to allow people to participate in the space through catering, retail and entertainment facilities as well?
"The area in Hung Hom is similar to that of the East Coast Boardwalk, and it has the potential to connect to nearby streets through different ways."
Ho said the commission would continue to look into development possibilities for the area so as to provide a space for all to enjoy.
