A lift technician died on Monday afternoon while carrying out repair works at a housing estate in Stanley.
Police were called to the scene on Tai Tam Road at around 3pm and found the victim trapped inside a lift shaft.
He suffered serious head injuries and was later pronounced dead.
Officers suspect the worker fell from a height of about 10 metres.
The Labour Department said it had sent staff to the scene and was investigating the cause of the incident.
The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims said the deceased worker was in his mid-20s and in the process of replacing lift ropes when tragedy struck.
"According to what we understand, the worker had been employed for four years and was working on the 8th floor at the time of the incident," the association's chief executive Fay Siu said.
"Our staff are assisting the family members. We urge the Labour Department to investigate the cause of the accident and to publish the investigation report."
The group also called on the employer to provide support for the victim's family.
