Police have classified as murder-suicide the death of a 77-year-old man and his estranged 71-year-old wife whose bodies were found at a public housing estate in Sau Mau Ping.

Speaking in a press briefing, assistant district commander of Sau Mau Ping, Terry Wan, said officers went to a flat at Po Tat Estate on Wednesday afternoon after they were alerted by the man's brother.

Officers found the man hanging in the kitchen and the body of the woman in the bedroom. She suffered injuries to her face, neck and hands.

Police said the couple, who were married in 1980, had been getting a divorce.

Officers said their relationship had strained after their son, who had suffered from depression, took his own life in 2018.

Wan said the woman filed for divorce in 2024 and a temporary order was issued the following year under which the couple were to live separately for a year.

Officers added the man recently returned from the mainland to Hong Kong, and the woman helped him find accommodation.
