Chief Executive John Lee on Friday called on media practitioners to uphold the core values of serving the interests of the country and Hong Kong in the face of an ever-changing global landscape.

The chief executive said the media sector should also become an important promoter of and contributor to Hong Kong’s thriving development.

Speaking at the annual Hong Kong News Awards ceremony, Lee also called on media workers to adhere to professional ethics, pointing out that with great influence comes great responsibility in news reporting.

“News reporting gives media workers some rights. With rights come responsibilities. These responsibilities include not being biased, not using news as a personal tool and not seeking private gains. They also include providing correct and high-quality information to people,” he said.

He said media workers should also do their part in contributing to national development by telling good Chinese and Hong Kong stories.

Professional, high-quality reporting, he said, will not only leave a correct record of the times, but will also help the government gain a more comprehensive understanding of public sentiment.

Lee also expressed the hope that award winners will continue to fulfil their duties and produce high-quality news content.
