Police on Monday said they are investigating a case in which a senior citizen was killed after being hit by a taxi in Tung Chung early in the morning.

The accident happened at around 6am on Man Tung Road, when a taxi driver, aged 65, lost control of his vehicle and allegedly hit the 87-year-old pedestrian, who was crossing the road.

The elderly pedestrian suffered severe head injuries and was in a coma before being taken to the North Lantau Hospital for emergency treatment.

He was confirmed dead at around 7am.

The taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.

The special investigation team under the New Territories South's traffic department has called on people, who may have witnessed the incident or who may have relevant information, to contact the police.
