Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday he is confident that a constructive China-US relationship will bring stability and certainty to Hong Kong’s trade and economic development.

His remarks came after President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, agreed to build a "constructive relationship of strategic stability" during talks in Beijing last week.

“Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy susceptible to the influence of the main market," Lee said.

"More certainty and stability in the market will greatly reduce the impact of external turbulence on Hong Kong, allowing Hong Kong to focus more on building a vibrant economy, pursuing development and construction, and improving people's livelihoods,” he said.

“The positive outcomes of this summit meeting between the two heads of governments have given me even greater confidence in Hong Kong's positive future development.”

Follow a major summit last week, Xi and Trump also reached a consensus in their economic and trade discussions, covering areas such as tariff arrangements, cooperation in trade and investment, market access and purchase of items.

Lee said the consensus reached by the two leaders would also be beneficial to Hong Kong-US trade.
