President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday and Tuesday.

Xinhua news agency said on Friday the two-day visit was at the invitation of Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK.

Xi, who's also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, paid his last official visit to the country in 2019.

This will be his first official trip abroad this year.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning outlined the importance of the visit at a regular news briefing.

"This year marks the 65th anniversary of the signing of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance," she said.

"China and the DPRK will take this visit as an opportunity to promote bilateral relations to keep pace with the times, achieve greater development, enhance the well-being of the people of the two countries, and make greater contributions to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the world at large."

Seoul said it hopes exchanges between Beijing and Pyongyang contribute to peace and stability.

Xi and Kim last met last September in Beijing during commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. (Xinhua & agencies)
