Chief Secretary Eric Chan said on Wednesday the government would transform Hong Kong into a world-class tourist destination, amid solid growth for inbound tourism this year.

Chan also pledged to develop the SAR into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, in line with the nation's 15th Five-Year Plan.

He made remarks at an industry forum jointly organised by the Travel Industry Council and China Tourism Group.

The chief secretary noted the government is set to launch a two-month public consultation over Hong Kong's own Five-Year Plan.

"We'll fully utilise all policies that are beneficial to Hong Kong from the central government to transform the city into a world-class tourist destination preferred by global travellers," he told event participants.

"We'll also leverage Hong Kong's unique advantages of linking the mainland with the world to become an important window for cultural exchanges between the East and the West."

Chan added the industry remains upbeat about the outlook. The SAR received 18.5 million tourists between January and April, a 15 percent rise year on year, while full-year arrivals are forecast to reach 53.8 million, representing an 8 percent jump.

Authorities, he said, will continue to improve the quality of travel activities, as well as cultural, sports and mega events to ensure a pleasant and vibrant experience for visitors.
