Four local universities have ranked among the top 50 institutions in a global university ranking.
In the QS World University Rankings 2027, the University of Hong Kong ranks highest among Hong Kong institutions, securing 11th place – the same ranking as a year ago.
HKU president Zhang Xiang said the university’s vision is to be a world-leading institution.
“The university’s success is built upon a solid foundation: attracting premier global talent, fostering an environment where scholars can thrive, and driving original research with real-world impact,” he said in a statement.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) rose to 18th from 32nd, breaking into the top 20 for the first time.
Head of CUHK Dennis Lo said entering the top 20 is an important milestone for the university.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was ranked 33rd while the Hong Kong Polytechnic University came in at 50th.
Another local institution, the City University of Hong Kong, was ranked 52nd.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology continued to top the global list, with Imperial College London and Stanford University tied for second place.
In a statement, the Education Bureau said such achievements not only fully recognise the efforts of Hong Kong's post-secondary education sector to strive for excellence, but also proves the significant progress made by the government in developing the city into an international post-secondary education hub.
"These achievements fully affirm the effectiveness of the HKSAR government's steadfast investment in education and its full support through the University Grants Committee (UGC) for institutions to continuously innovate, optimise, expand capacity, and enhance quality," a spokesman said in a statement.
"The significant year-on-year rise in the overall rankings of our institutions further validates Hong Kong's strong appeal as a premier hub for international high-end talent.
"The stellar performance of UGC-funded universities in the international rankings is by no means accidental," the spokesman added.
The bureau said it will continue to leverage the advantages of the SAR's post-education sector and support institutions in building world-class universities and disciplines.
