Lawmaker William Wong has apologised after he was being linked to a traffic accident on the Chinese University campus on Monday night.
Sources said Wong, who's associate dean of the faculty of engineering at the university, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after his vehicle hit two cars parked at an outdoor campus car park.
Wong, 66, is said to have returned to a university staff residence after the accident, and failed to pass a breathalyser test when police officers arrived on campus to investigate.
No one is believed to have been injured.
The case was classified as traffic accident, careless driving, failing to stop and report after an accident, as well as drink-driving.
Officers at the New Territories South Regional Headquarters are following up on the case.
Writing on social media, Wong said the incident has sparked public debate and caused inconvenience to the Legislative Council, the university, as well as various sectors.
He said he will fully cooperate with the investigation by the police and relevant government departments.
