Public officials should raise the standard of their conduct and intensify commitment to their duties, Legislative Council President Starry Lee said on Saturday, stressing that society’s expectations leave no margin for error.

The comments came after lawmaker William Wong resigned on Friday, following his arrest earlier in the week for alleged drink-driving in which his vehicle struck two parked cars at Chinese University.

Wong, who serves as associate dean of engineering at the institution, also had his administrative duties suspended following the incident.

Speaking after an event, Lee said the case has already drawn significant public attention.

However, she noted that Wong’s resignation reflects his willingness to accept responsibility.

"I believe that his case will be handled in accordance with the law and regulations in court in due course," Lee said.

She went on to say that every member of the Legislative Council is fully aware of the high bar set by the public.

"I hope that all members can learn from this incident, draw lessons from it, be more prudent in their demands on themselves, be diligent in their work and hold themselves to stricter standards of conduct," Lee said.
