Police have said they will place a holding charge on a woman who was allegedly involved in a fight in a public place which led to the death of another woman.

The incident happened on Tuesday, when officers received reports at 10.31pm saying a 53-year-old woman was allegedly pushed to the ground during a dispute with a 50-year-old at a public light bus stop in Wah Fu Estate.

The victim sustained bruises on her neck as well as scratches to her head and hand, and was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in an unconscious state.

She was later pronounced dead that day. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The 50-year-old was arrested at the scene, and police said she admitted to have fought with the victim under caution.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Assistant Director of Crime, Hui Hong-kit, said initial investigations showed that the victim and suspect did not know each other, and that it is believed the dispute arose when the victim accidentally stepped on the arrestee's foot when getting off the minibus.

"For now, the case appears to be an unlawful assault leading to death. We can charge the suspect with murder based on prima facie evidence," Hui said.

"But whether this will happen will depend on legal advice obtained from the Department of Justice. We do not rule out the possibility that we might amend charges after getting legal advice and the coroner's report," he added.

The 50-year-old woman will appear at Eastern Magistrates' Court on Friday.
