Customs officers have arrested a 57-year-old woman for allegedly trying to smuggle a puppy through Lo Wu crossing, the government said on Friday.
Customs and Excise Department officers intercepted the mainland resident and found the puppy – with an estimated market value of about HK$3,000 – in her sling bag on Thursday.
The case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) for follow-up investigations.
Customs officials reminded the public that importing animals without a valid permit is an offence.
Under the Rabies Regulation, any person found guilty of illegally importing animals, carcasses or animal products is liable to a fine of up to HK$50,000 and imprisonment for one year.
Also on Thursday, customs seized two endangered live birds at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point.
Officers intercepted a 46 year-old local woman at the control point's arrival hall, and found the birds in her backpack.
The AFCD confirmed that the two birds were listed as endangered, and are following up on the case.
