Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on the UK to provide Chinese companies operating in the country with a "fair, equitable and non-discriminatory" business environment during talks with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in Manila.

Wang said Britain should avoid imposing security implications on economic and trade issues, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Meeting on the sidelines of an Asean foreign ministers' meeting in the Philippine capital on Thursday, Wang also told Miliband that the two countries should work together to jointly uphold multilateralism and transcend differences.

Wang said he hopes Britain would adhere to the one-China principle and uphold the political foundation of bilateral relations.

The foreign minister added that Beijing and London should continue to work together to enhance political trust and deepen cooperation.

Miliband said the new British government, under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, places great importance on China-UK relations and will continue to build the long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership with Beijing, Xinhua reported.

The two sides should continue to strengthen cooperation on global security, health and development issues, Miliband added.

Wang also held talks with other foreign ministers in Manila, including Le Hoai Trung of Vietnam, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar of India and Egypt's Badr Abdelatty.

Wang said on Wednesday China stands ready to work with Asean in forging closer cooperation and tackling new challenges and uncertainties.
