A woman has been arrested after five pets were killed in a fire at a flat in Mong Kok.

Police were alerted to the fire, which broke out in a flat on Tung Choi Street, at around 9.30pm on Thursday.

Firefighters broke into the flat and found three cats and two dogs unconscious. They were later pronounced dead at the scene by staff from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The 56‑year‑old woman, who is believed to be the owner of the flat, was arrested on suspicion of theft of electricity. Officers believe the woman left the apartment at about 6pm, after which a fire broke out in the unit's air‑conditioner due to a short circuit.
