The Observatory says tropical cyclone Noul has intensified into a typhoon as it moves across the north-eastern part of the South China Sea. It said it may issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 later in the afternoon, with the Standby Signal No. 1 remaining in force at least until noon.

The Observatory said Noul is expected to make landfall between Huizhou and Jieyang at first on Sunday, although its distance from Hong Kong and the size of its gale winds remain uncertain.

It said, if Noul adopts a more westwards track, its associated gale winds may affect some coastal areas of Hong Kong.

The Observatory said it would continue to assess the possibility of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals later tonight.
