The Airport Authority has confirmed that flights will be disrupted from Saturday night until Sunday noon as Typhoon Noul draws nearer to Hong Kong.

Acting chief executive Steven Yiu said both the authority and airlines are actively coordinating their response.

The airport has already activated its flight rescheduling system, and Yiu advised passengers with travel plans to check the status of their flights with airlines before heading to the airport.

Additional contingency measures are in the works, he added.

"Most airlines are still in meetings, but I believe they will start notifying affected passengers this afternoon, so there’s no need for anyone to worry," Yiu said.

"We’ll hold another press conference at the airport tomorrow morning, when we will provide more specific details on the number of affected flights and the expected time slots."

Noting that the SAR hasn’t seen a typhoon in some time, Yiu said the authority wanted to give the public as much advance notice as possible.

"I hope everyone will keep a close eye on flight updates," he said.

Cathay Pacific has urged passengers to check the status of their flights.

The airline said it will automatically rebook all affected customers onto the next available flights and continue to keep passengers up to date with the latest information.

Its budget arm, HK Express, also advised passengers travelling this weekend to stay informed of any potential changes before leaving for the airport.

Other SAR-based carriers – HK Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines – said they are closely monitoring the storm and that flight services may be adjusted as weather conditions develop.
