Hong Kong will see its first No. 9 typhoon signal of the year at 1.10am on Sunday as Typhoon Noul draws closer to the territory.

“Local winds will strengthen significantly in the next few hours”, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) warned. “The Observatory will issue the Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9 at 1.10 am.”

The storm is forecast to make landfall over the vicinity of Huizhou to Shanwei later on Sunday morning, and pass around 100 kilometres northwest of the territory.

The HKO said Noul will bring frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, and urged people to pay attention to the latest weather information issued by the Observatory.

The Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 was issued at 10.10pm on Saturday night.

Chief Executive John Lee said he has instructed the relevant government departments to take all necessary measures to protect people's lives and property.

Writing on his social media page, Lee urged members of the public to remain vigilant and stay tuned to the latest weather announcements.

Most public transport operators said they will be scaling back services amid the storm.

KMB said it will maintain limited services for its daytime routes until their scheduled last departures.

All late night or overnight services, meanwhile, will be suspended.

Citybus also said it will continue to provide services until 12.30am before their gradual suspension. All overnight services will be suspended as well.

The MTRC, for its part, said its rail and bus services will remain normal until the end of traffic.
