Tourism minister Rosanna Law on Tuesday said she hopes upcoming mega events could effectively stimulate consumption, as the Kai Tak Mall recorded a 40 percent growth in sales in the first five months this year.

Her comments came after the Tourism Board on Monday said it will be offering discounts over hotels and tourist attractions across the city for a month, starting from July 31.

Visitors and locals presenting a valid ticket from designated mega events or activities can enjoy unlimited extra five-percent discounts at over 100 locations, covering dining, attraction tickets, and merchandise.

Speaking on a radio programme, Law said visitors and locals presenting a valid ticket from designated mega events or activities will be able to enjoy a variety of perks.

One of which would be the Football Festival – running from Friday to August 5 – featuring four football clubs from Europe.

"As far as I know, over 100 restaurants will be offering a five-percent discount. For accommodation, this will have to depend on the number of overseas football fans coming to the city, as I know some hotels are offering perks according to what events will be held at Kai Tak Sports Park," she said.

"In terms of merchandise, there are several pop-up stores set up at Kai Tak Mall, which are quite popular," she added.

Law said over two-thirds of the tickets have been sold so far, adding that the organiser will confirm the player list in the next couple of days.

She added that a series of events will be held over the summer, including an exhibition showcasing ancient Egyptian civilisation, Chiikawa Artiverse, as well as a series of performances.
