The Social Welfare Department said on Friday it is exercising statutory supervision over a baby boy's care and protection, after the three-month old's parents filed for a protection order against the government.

The department said the move is pursuant to the court's earlier protection order and directives, and would submit a report in due course.

Last month, the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court issued a three-year protection order for the boy to place him under the department’s care, following the arrest of the parents on suspicion of child neglect.

Speaking to reporters before filing a writ to the High Court, the parents of baby boy Danny made the claim that the department was "torturing and arbitrarily detaining" him.

The father, Tsang Wai-bong, alleged that the department has neglected Danny’s need to get breast milk.

He also said the department had failed to provide key documents to show that the parents were inflicting harm on the child during the hearings when authorities sought a protection order for the boy.
