The Water Supplies Department (WSD) said on Sunday that a fresh water supply pipe in Kwai Chung had developed a leak, affecting a nearby private housing estate.

It received reports of the leak, that occurred on Ta Chuen Ping Street, in the morning.

In a social media post, the department said the 200mm pipe is used to supply water to Po Sing Centre.

Laundry shop owner Leung told RTHK that she had to close down for the day because of the water disruption, and expects losses of up to HK$3,000.

"My colleague notified me at 9:25 that there's no water at all, and the workers outside said [the maintenance] will take hours," she said.

"So we decided to ask the staff to head home and rest. We will suspend operations today."

Leung said that such incidents are hard to prevent as water pipes age.

A resident surnamed Lam said the suspension of fresh water supply has impacted her amid the hot weather, but noted that nothing could be done.

The WSD has provided bottled water and temporary water supply, including eight water tanks near the entrance of the private housing estate.

It added that it will strive to complete repairs by midnight and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
