A 59-year-old man died on Sunday after going missing for hours in the water during a triathlon event in Tai Po.
Police said Fire Services Department officers rescued the man at around 3pm from the waters off Tai Mei Tuk, more than seven hours after he was reported missing.
The man was unconscious when rushed to Nethersole Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The event organiser, Triathlon Association of Hong Kong China, said they received a report from on-site staff at around 7am that a participant in the men's 55–59 age group had failed to complete the swimming leg within the expected time frame.
The association said they immediately activated the emergency response mechanism, notified relevant government departments, and launched search and rescue operations.
It also offered their deepest condolences to the man's family and said they will do their utmost to assist them.
