A worker has died after falling from height at a construction site in Kowloon City.

Police received a report of the fatal accident on Sa Po Road at around noon on Monday, and have classified the case as an industrial accident.

The man was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Fay Siu, chief executive of the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, said the man was a safety personnel at the site.

“The person doing safety-related work is believed to have fallen from the rooftop onto the scaffolding and died,” she said.

“He was in his 30s and leaves behind two children aged seven and three. His wife, a housewife, is now feeling helpless. We hope to know the cause of the accident as soon as possible.

“This is already the 17th fatal accident in the construction industry since the beginning of this year. This is deeply upsetting. We hope relevant departments can look for ways to prevent similar events from happening.”

Siu said it was unclear what duties the man was performing when the accident occurred and whether he needed to wear a safety belt.

The Labour Department (LD) said it is highly concerned about the accident and has issued a suspension order preventing people from using the building's roof.

In a statement, it said contractors cannot resume the work process until it is satisfied that suitable measures to minimise the relevant risks have been taken.

The department said it would complete the investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, ascertain the liability of duty holders and take actions if any laws are violated.

It reminded employers to take adequate precautionary measures to prevent workers from falling from a height. The LD also warned that those who fail to provide safe working environments may face a fine up to HK$10 million and face a two-year prison term.
