The one-month adaptation period for allowing dogs into designated restaurants drew to a close on Sunday, with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) describing the rollout as smooth.

The number of participating establishments grew from roughly 940 at the outset to more than 980 currently, according to a department spokesman.

Under the first phase of the initiative, a quota of 1,000 restaurants has been set.

As of August 8, officers had conducted some 29,600 inspections of permitted premises.

They issued 77 verbal warnings and took enforcement action against more serious violations – including warning letters sent to three licensees for persistently cooking or reheating food at dining tables, and two prosecutions for failing to keep dogs securely leashed.

In addition to offering on-the-ground support to permitted restaurants, the team has worked on raising compliance awareness among operators and patrons through publicity and educational efforts, the FEHD said.

Officers also inspected non-permitted restaurants and brought prosecutions against six establishments found to be in breach of regulations by allowing dogs on the premises.

The FEHD reminded operators that before applying to join the scheme, they should carefully assess their restaurant’s market positioning, customer base and operational capabilities, and make adequate preparations to ensure the policy delivers its intended benefits.

The system also includes a waiting list, ensuring that if a restaurant withdraws, the freed-up quota can be reassigned swiftly and in an orderly manner.
