Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in Zhejiang province on Sunday afternoon, bringing torrential rain and strong ⁠winds and triggering warnings of flooding and landslides.

Dolphin made landfall at Yuhuan of Taizhou City at about 5.30pm, packing maximum sustained winds of 42 metres per second (151 km/h), according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).

It made a second landfall at Yueqing City at around 6.40pm.

Transport was widely disrupted across the east of the country and more than one million people were evacuated from their homes.

Nearly 1,400 flights in and out of Shanghai's two main passenger airports were cancelled on Sunday, CCTV reported, whereas Hangzhou's airport saw 270 inbound and outbound flights cancelled.

The NMC issued the highest red typhoon alert on Sunday morning. It warned local authorities in the affected areas to guard against extreme downpours.

Torrential rain is forecast through Monday across Zhejiang, Shanghai, northern Fujian, northeastern Jiangxi, central ⁠and southern Anhui, and much of Jiangsu.
