Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau has called for closer strategic ties between Hong Kong and Malaysia ahead of the opening of a new economic and trade office in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday afternoon.

Addressing a business symposium in the Malaysian capital, Yau spotlighted new collaboration opportunities in fintech, AI, Islamic finance, and green finance.

He also highlighted a government initiative supporting Chinese Mainland enterprises to go overseas via Hong Kong.

"We see new opportunities arising from such collaboration, which will translate into stronger bonding and mutual benefits. We see a win-win outcome for both countries," he said.

Bilateral trade between the SAR and Malaysia rose 27.4 percent year‑on‑year in 2025, reaching US$34.8 billion.

Yau said that reflected the strength of the economic partnership.

"We see a future in which Hong Kong and Malaysia are not just trading partners, but strategic partners: partners in innovation, partners in sustainability, and partners in shaping the economies of tomorrow," he added.

Yau is leading a business delegation made up of representatives from sectors such as finance, professional services, healthcare, automobile and innovation and technology from both Hong Kong and the mainland.
