Around 1,000 civil servants on Thursday took part in a stress test at the new Huanggang port public transport interchange, the first large-scale drill conducted at the Hong Kong side of the facility.

Participants from more than 20 government departments travelled to the interchange using various modes of public transport, including buses, cross-boundary coaches, minibuses and taxis. They then made their way through the departure hall and arrival hall of the port building, before heading back to the interchange to leave by public transport.

The process was repeated in loops to simulate pedestrian and vehicle traffic, involving more than 120 vehicle trips.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang said the drill went smoothly and was "meticulously arranged", according to a government statement.

He noted that the drill covered passenger boarding and alighting, pedestrian and vehicle traffic management, terminal passageway capacity, signage clarity and barrier-free facilities. There were also simulations for passengers boarding and getting off taxis, buses and minibuses at the same time.

The security minister also said some participants pointed out issues regarding unclear signage and queue control. Tang said officials have taken note of the feedback and will follow up with improvements.

He added that stress tests will continue at the border checkpoint almost daily to ensure safe and smooth operations when the port officially opens to the public.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan was also there to inspect the drill.

She said her bureau will review and improve the transport arrangements, to ensure a highly efficient transport network once port operations begin.
