Police on Monday said two dogs have succumbed to their injuries after a large dog was suspected of attacking them in Yuen Long.

The force said they were alerted by a dog owner at about 3pm on Monday that his 17-year-old poodle was attacked by a dog that was about 1m tall and 1.5m long near a car park at Yoho Mall.

The poodle was pronounced dead after the owner rushed it to a nearby veterinarian clinic.

In another incident nearby about 20 minutes later, a four-year-old Bichon Frisé was suspected to be bitten by the same dog weighing about 60kg.

The Bichon Frisé was certified dead at the scene.

Police said the large dog wore a collar at the time, but it was not leashed or masked.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said the dog, that was later taken to its animal management centre, is microchipped and licensed.

It said officers are reaching out to the dog owner for investigation, and would carry out a prosecution if there is enough evidence.

The department called on owners to always keep their dogs under control, including keeping them on a leash to avoid causing nuisance or harm to other people or animals, or risk a penalty of HK$10,000.

Large dogs weighing 20kg or above should be held on a leash of not more than 2m in public places, or face a maximum penalty of HK$25,000 and three months behind bars, it added.
