Customs said on Wednesday they have seized 200 suspected illegally imported live birds in two separate cases with an estimated total market value of about HK$20,000 at the Lo Wu check point.

A 33-year-old incoming mainland female passenger and a 51-year-old incoming local male passenger were stopped at the arrival hall on Tuesday. Bird cages containing the birds were found in their personal baggage. Both were arrested.

The cases have been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up.

Under the Public Health (Animals and Birds) Regulations, importing any bird without a valid health certificate is an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of HK$25,000.
