The establishment of a regional office by Qatar Airways Cargo in Hong Kong has reinforced the city's status as a global aviation hub, according to Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan.
Her remarks came as the Airport Authority signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Doha-based cargo carrier on Wednesday to strengthen cooperation on air connectivity and aviation development.
Under the agreement, Qatar Airways Cargo will expand its presence in Hong Kong by increasing flight frequencies and developing new cargo routes.
The MoU will also enable Hong Kong International Airport to enhance connectivity with markets with development potential, such as destinations in South America.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Chan welcomed the establishment of the regional office, adding it reflected the airline's strong confidence in Hong Kong.
"Hong Kong and Qatar have long enjoyed a strong foundation of cooperation in aviation. The MoU signed today is of strategic significance and will elevate the partnership between the two places to a new level," she said.
Airport Authority chief executive Vivian Cheung noted the air cargo market in the region is highly competitive, and pledged to continue attracting and working with different airlines to strengthen the SAR's connectivity and competitiveness.
Qatar Airways Cargo currently operates around 56 flights each week from Hong Kong to global destinations.
