Chinese University Vice-Chancellor Dennis Lo says Hong Kong's scientists need better training on intellectual property to protect their work and turn research into real-world products.

Speaking on RTHK's "On Broadcast Drive" programme, he said some scientists are a little naive – spending years on research but not bothering to patent their inventions, thinking they are simply contributing to the world.

He explained that without a patent, other companies will just take it for themselves.

Lo urged scientists to patent their work, saying they can always donate the rights later – but without a patent, they could lose all control.

He also said universities should do more to protect scientists and help them understand their rights – and researchers should learn to spot unfair terms when they accept funding.

Lo highlighted a government-backed fund that does not take too big a stake, allowing inventors to gain commercial experience before stepping into the open market.

"I think the government could consider setting up something like an early-stage angel fund that is not too dilutive – so that inventors don't lose their rights too early," he said.

"This would allow them to explore commercialisation for a year or two, gain some experience, and learn the ropes before stepping out into the real world to raise money."
