HK stocks join region in doldrums amid tech worries

Regional stocks came under pressure at the start of the week amid fears that artificial intelligence-related shares would come under pressure ahead of Nvidia earnings later in the week.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened down 229 points, or 0.88 percent, at 25,780 before its losses deepened to put the benchmark 501 points, or 1.93 percent, lower at 25,508 in early trading.

The China enterprises index opened 84 points, or 0.98 percent, lower at 8,549 while the tech index dipped 53 points, or 1.11 percent, to 4,713.

Up north, the Shanghai Composite Index opened down two points, or 0.06 percent, at 3,902 before inching further down in early trading.

The Shenzhen Component Index opened up 23 points, or 0.17 percent, at 14,118 before plunging into the red to put it 266 points, or 1.89 percent, lower at 13,827 in early trading.

It was the same for the ChiNext Index as well, opening up four points, or 0.13 percent, at 3,550 before plunging 105 points, or 2.99 percent, to 3,439 in early trading.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei opened down almost 39 points, or 0.06 percent, at 65,977 before dipping deeper into the red at one stage before noon to be 185 points, or 0.28 percent down as the 225-strong benchmark moved between small gains and losses.

In Seoul, the Kospi 177 points, or 2.57 percent, lower at one stage before noon at 6,735 after opening down 31 points, or 0.46 percent, at 6,881. (Reuters/Xinhua)
