Hong Kong saw year-on-year increases in the value of both its exports and imports in July as demand for AI-related products helped boost the city's trade performance.

According to the latest data from the Census and Statistics Department on Tuesday, the value of the city's total exports of goods rose 50.7 percent compared with a year earlier, to HK$672.5 billion.

The increase came after a year-on-year increase of more than 53 percent in June.

The value of the SAR's imports also increased, rising 41 percent compared with a year earlier, to HK$677.4 billion in July.

In the first seven months of this year, the SAR recorded an overall 40.9 percent increase in the value of its exports compared with the same period in 2025, and a 40.6 percent increase in the value of its imports.

A trade deficit of HK$299.4 billion – equivalent to 6.8 percent of the value of Hong Kong's imports – was recorded in the seven-month period.

A government spokesman said the city had seen “impressive growth” in exports of AI-related electronic products, adding that robust global demand for these goods would continue supporting Hong Kong’s merchandise trade performance.

However, the spokesman warned that downside risks remain in light of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, trade protectionism among advanced economies, as well as rapid expansion of global investment in AI.
