The Observatory issued the red rainstorm warning at 5.05am on Thursday as heavy rain battered the city.

Classes of all AM schools and whole-day schools were suspended.

The Drainage Services Department asked members of the public to report any street flooding.

The Labour Department said employers should make work arrangements for their employees as soon as possible.

The red rainstorm warning lasted till 9.20am when it was replaced by the amber warning.

Authorities said classes of PM schools will proceed as usual unless advised otherwise.

The Drainage Services Department said it activated its emergency control centre and deployed 90 emergency response teams to handle possible flooding reports, conducting repeated inspections and clearing some 240 locations across Hong Kong that are prone to flooding due to blockage when the red rainstorm flooding was in effect.

As of 9am, the authorities had confirmed no flooding cases.

The department said it will maintain close communication and cooperation with the Observatory and the Highways Department, and reminded the public that during adverse weather, heavy rain may cause rivers to surge suddenly and people should stay away from waterways and drainage channels.
